My Journey to Becoming a Professional Dog Groomer

In the summer of 2025, I committed myself to a 10-week Professional Dog Grooming Program at the New York Academy of Pet Styling in New York City. I carefully chose this school because it fit my schedule and offered the hands-on training I needed to pursue my dream of becoming a professional dog groomer.

As a Deaf student, communication was one of my biggest challenges. At first, there was no full-time sign language interpreter available for my classes. The school owner worked with a social worker program to help arrange interpreting services. Eventually, I was able to attend classes with a sign language interpreter through video on a laptop, allowing me to communicate effectively with my instructors and fully participate in the program.

My class was small, with only two students, which gave me more personalized attention and additional opportunities to learn. The instructors shared many years of professional grooming experience and taught me essential grooming skills, including bathing, drying, brushing, de-matting, nail trimming, breed-specific styling, clipper work, and safe dog handling techniques.

One of the most difficult skills for me was de-matting. I quickly learned that proper tools, products, and techniques could make a significant difference in both efficiency and comfort for the dog. My instructors corrected my mistakes, introduced me to professional de-matting products, and helped me improve my grooming techniques. This was a turning point in my education because I realized how much the right knowledge and tools could improve both the dog’s experience and the groomer’s efficiency.

Handling dogs of different sizes and temperaments was another challenge. Some dogs moved constantly, making nail trimming and grooming more difficult. Through practice and repetition, I developed stronger handling skills and gained confidence working with both small and large breeds.

Before attending grooming school, I had completed six weeks of dog bathing training. That experience gave me a good foundation in bathing, drying, shampooing, and conditioning. However, I quickly learned that every grooming school and grooming business has its own systems and techniques. Some methods were very different from what I had previously learned. Instead of resisting change, I kept an open mind, accepted feedback, and adapted to professional grooming standards.

Throughout the program, I completed regular tests and evaluations. At times, I felt frustrated because communication barriers sometimes made it difficult to fully understand the instructors’ feedback. I was occasionally told that I worked too slowly, which was discouraging. However, I refused to give up. I continued practicing, studying, and repeating techniques until my skills improved.

The program introduced me to advanced grooming concepts, including wide-blade clipper work, breed-specific styling, scissoring techniques, and professional finishing methods. These lessons helped me reach a much higher level of grooming knowledge than I had previously experienced.

I also spent time reading grooming books, watching educational videos, and learning from award-winning grooming professionals. One memorable experience was grooming a Standard Poodle. Through that experience, I learned how intelligent, sensitive, and expressive dogs can be. It strengthened the connection I felt with animals and confirmed that dog grooming was the career I truly wanted.

Before entering the grooming industry, I worked as a freelance photographer for weddings and special events. While I enjoyed photography, I eventually realized my true passion was working with dogs. I became inspired by professional groomers on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and grooming education channels. Watching experienced groomers helped motivate me to continue learning and improving my skills.

I also discovered grooming expos and educational events, including popular grooming competitions in Pennsylvania. Through books, videos, and industry resources, I learned that successful grooming businesses often rely on strong teams of groomers, bathers, and assistants working together to provide excellent service and care for pets.

When final exam day arrived, I felt nervous but prepared. My final grooming test involved completing a full groom independently. While experienced groomers might complete the groom in approximately three hours, it took me about four hours as a beginner. I remained focused, worked carefully, and gave my best effort.

When my instructor completed the final evaluation, I was thrilled to learn that I had passed.

Earning my certification was especially meaningful because of the sacrifices I made throughout the program. Every training day began around 5:00 a.m. I would wake up, eat breakfast, and begin my commute. The round-trip drive often totaled nearly five hours each day. Over the course of ten weeks, I dedicated nearly 200 hours to commuting long distances, attending classes, studying, and improving my grooming skills. After a full day of training, I would drive home and often arrive between 7:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. By then, I was exhausted from the long commute and intensive hands-on learning, so I would eat dinner, prepare for the next day, and go to bed early before starting the same routine again the following morning. I dedicated hours to training, studying, commuting, and improving my skills.

My dream was always to start my own mobile dog grooming business, and completing this program brought me one step closer to achieving that goal.

On graduation day, I felt emotional and proud. During my drive home after my final class, I reflected on everything I had overcome and even shed a few tears. The journey had been difficult, but I had accomplished something I once thought was impossible.

After graduation, I took a short trip to Pennsylvania to relax and think about my future goals. During that trip, I reflected on how much I had grown, how much I had learned, and what I wanted my future to look like in the grooming industry.

However, another challenge soon began: finding employment.

Before attending grooming school, I had approached Petco and asked if I could join their dog grooming training program. At that time, I had no professional dog grooming certification and very little grooming experience. Petco did not offer me a training opportunity, and I was not hired.

I was disappointed and upset, but I understood their decision. Many applicants already had professional grooming certifications and more experience than I did. The grooming industry is competitive, and employers often choose candidates with stronger qualifications and proven experience.

Instead of giving up, I chose to invest in myself. I enrolled in the New York Academy of Pet Styling, completed the program, earned my certification, and worked hard to improve my skills.

After graduation, I continued applying for grooming positions at many businesses, including Petco and independent grooming salons. Over time, I applied to more than 25 different grooming businesses. Despite my certification, finding a job was still difficult. Some employers wanted more experience. Others were looking for groomers who could work at a faster pace.

Although the process was frustrating, I refused to quit. Every rejection motivated me to keep learning, keep improving, and keep moving forward.

My journey was not easy, but every obstacle taught me patience, resilience, determination, and perseverance. As a Deaf professional, I have faced challenges that many people do not see. Yet those challenges have made me stronger and more determined to succeed.

Today, I continue building my skills and working toward my goal of growing Marco’s Paws Mobile Grooming. My mission is to provide professional, compassionate, and high-quality grooming services while creating a positive and stress-free experience for every dog I meet.

This journey has taught me that success is not about how many times you fail. It is about how many times you get back up and keep moving forward.

And my story is still being written.
